I’m fairly new to Lucas, KS. My Big Boy and I moved here six months ago. We found our spot…close to Wilson Lake (the clearest lake in Kansas) near a small community that has everything we need (bank, grocery store, gas station)( even a wi-fi hot spot…check out this photo, I love it!)
…close to town but not quite in town (which fulfills my desire to be ‘in the country’).Those were the reasons we chose Lucas. But I am finding more and more that I believe God put me here…right where I belong.
Let me tell you what I love about Lucas, KS! Lucas is the Grassroots Art Capital of Kansas. What’s that really mean? Lucas is home of the Grassroots Art Center (you don’t want to miss it). Art from the heart. Art from junk. Bottle caps, barbed wire, pop tabs, dishes and plates, wood carvings, cement creations… about anything you can think of is displayed in art.
On June 1st Lucas officially opened “Bowl Plaza”…public restrooms like you’ve never seen before. Shaped like a toilet bowl with mosaic everywhere! There will absolutely be no boring visits to the “stall” in Lucas…you won’t need reading material…the walls are covered in crazy, unique, one-of-a kind mosaic.
And if that’s not enough…over 100 years ago S.P. Dinsmoor created the “Garden of Eden”. It’s art at its most ‘bizarre’. A garden sculpted in concrete depicting Dinsmore’s political and biblical views. Not only that, he created a mausoleum, which holds his remains! I’m amazed at his forethought, and the attraction he created that 100 years later is the center of this grassroots art community.
So here in this tiny Kansas town, a little town on the prairie…are some of the most ‘out-side-of-the-box’ creations.
Wouldn’t it be nice to live somewhere where ‘different’ is okay, where ‘crazy’ is kind of cool, where ‘normal’…well, what is normal? Where each person could be just who they want to be with no fear of ridicule? I’m not saying that’s the social climate in Lucas…but they’ve got a good start! And me, well, I’m kinda loving Lucas.
