If you’re 49andcounting, boy, do I have news for you! Body temperature will soon become a life altering experience.
I’ve just spent a few days with my mother and come to realize that my “hot flashes” will soon turn to “cold blood”. I need to premise this blog post with the fact that it is August in Kansas, and over 100 degrees. My 49andcounting body says, “turn the thermostat down, turn on the fans, where are the ice cubes?” The clammy, warm feeling starting at the back of my neck and running all the way down to the back of my knees…well, it may be Hot in Kansas…but I believe it has much to do with this getting older gig! I can’t get enough cool air, and shedding clothes is Not an option (at this age, less is better when it comes to showing skin!)
What I’ve realized in the past few days is that my mother (in her late 70’s) has at some point veered to the opposite end of the scale. She wants a sweater, she inches the thermostat up when I’m not looking…”boy it’s cold in here”. And memories flood my mind of visiting a great-aunt well into her 80’s…walking into her home felt like a steam bath!
I’m just warning you…be prepared…the big 5o will send you’re body temp soaring. And news to me…think the big 70 will plummet it to the freezer! My the things we have to look forward to at 49andcounting!
Let me also warn you: at sixty you feel both – in rapid succession. Most of the time I feel chilled. It’s sweater time in August. Then in a literal “flash” – someone has turned up the temperature of my blood. It’s an oven/freezer merry-go-round.
Ah, the joys of hitting 50! My hot flashes were really horrid a couple years ago when we lived in Virginia… I swear I wanted to tear my skin off to see if that’d cool me off! Somehow, it’s better here in Idaho where it’s drier… it’s hot, but not humid. Still…. an ice cold water bottle on the back of my neck is one of my great joys these days.
