Childhood Friends…

Some things are lasting. Some things never grow old. Some things ‘get you’ to your core, revive your soul, and blanket you with security. That’s the way it is with me when I see these girls. They are my lifetime friends.
Candy was my first best friend. I think I actually spent more hours at her house than mine. We rode horses together (she rode, of course she had her own horse…I tried), we tried out for cheerleader together in 7th grade (and made it I might add!), we listened to Donny Osmond, and talked for hours and hours to boyfriends on the phone. According to a 12 yr old mind, Candy had everything ‘cool’ and ‘groovy’. Pink shag carpet, the neatest 8 track player, the first car. Ahhh, yeah, her life was good!
Soon enough, the boyfriend started getting more time than I did and Clara moved to town. And thus began the days of a metallic blue Ford Mustang, learning to golf, firsts jobs as Pizza Hut waitresses, and more cheering.  Listening to Kansas and Styx, Beach Boys and Bob Seeger.   I wonder just how many miles we drove up and down main street on Friday & Saturday nights. I know that $5 would fill up my car when we were done!
Linda, has always been there. From the time her mom gave me piano lessons to our weddings. She is such a good listener, and I believe either one of us could probably make millions on our highschool poetry about love and life! (if we hadn’t have burned them!)  We listened to 45 rpm records in her bedroom, watched American Bandstand on Saturday mornings, and spent a lot of nights at the local drive-in.
These friends came to a surprise birthday party for me. It was so much fun. They know secrets about me (the ones they didn’t tell at my party, turkeys!).  Whenever I see them it’s just like we’ve never been apart.  We could talk for hours.   Whether they know it or not, they are the background fabric to my lifetime quilt.  They are the part that will always stay the same.  I love them.  Thank you, friends.

And they are all gonna be pretty ticked that I posted this photo!  (that’s what you get for telling my secrets!)

About 49andcounting

Hi! I'm a mom, wife, grammy, sister, friend at that ALMOST 50 age!! (Okay, since I started this a few years ago...well, add a bit to 49andcounting!) How the heck did I get here so fast?!? I love, love, love- my girls, antiques, rural America, history, Jesus, junkin, the lake and my Big Boy...not particularly in that order. It's about time I change this profile a bit. After a year or living in our 5th wheel in beautiful Pennsylvania, My Big Boy and I are back to the Kansas Prairies. And there's just nothing like "Home Sweet Home". Hitting the Big 50 has its own unique, well...let's say...blessings :) So come along, laugh with me...cry with me...praise God with me...and let's do this 49andcounting thing, together!
